Arsenal in the FA CUP Final: This is Why We Support!

ja banner.svg

Thinking back to last year, and watching the agonising penalty shoot out that got us to the final, and knowing that we are again in the FA Cup final, brings back more than game memories. It brings back the emotional roller coaster we all felt during a crazy 120 minutes that ended in universal relief as much as sheer joy, a moment some will tell their kids about, and a moment we all hope was the start of another successful period in the history of Arsenal football club.

For millions around the world, those not able to attend games, we watch Arsenal on dodgy live streams, some pay hundreds in cable TV bills a month just to have a satellite to watch the games week in, week out and others gather at supporters clubs and sports bars to see their beloved teams play in games big or small.

I’m one of those people. I’m not going to sit here and tell you how I’m more dedicated to Arsenal than anyone else, but I will tell you my story. How these games affect us all, and how these things are a part of daily life for those in London, and indeed, those like myself, out of it.

The Arsenal Čech book will be opened early

nr banner 1

The 0-0 result against Sunderland was of course a significant point and assuming there is not a huge and unlikely swing in goals this weekend we will finish 3rd however poor the result may have seemed at the final whistle.

It certainly had the feeling of one of those games from the moment I got into the ground, empty seats everywhere and you could hear a pin drop. When the atmosphere is like that you really need the team to go at the opposition and the crowd behind them and it took two Sunderland chances for this to eventually happen.

Finishing 2nd or 3rd makes no difference apart from a few quid on the Arsenal bottom line of the accounts department. It is finishing 3rd and not 4th that will lead to a very different approach from the club in the transfer market.

Arsène Wenger – Britain’s Greatest Architect

guest banner

By ‘ABW Guest Blogger’ Josh Dawe (@realjoshdawe)

What makes a great football manager? Is it the size of their trophy haul? Their ability to assemble a team? Or their ability to bring through youth players? Or is it combination of all three.

We can all find managers that fit into these various buckets, but the combination of all three is a very rare thing.

Chelsea, with their special one at the helm, have bulldozed their way to the title this season, picking up the league cup along the way. José now has around 20 trophies, collected in just 15 years across 4 leagues. However as an article from Philippe Auclair pointed out last week – he is not a builder.

Dear Arsenal…Grow Up

at banner

“I think it just shows, you know, I’ve talked all season about the team winning in different ways and performing in different ways. We’ve won games dominating possession and dominating teams and winning that way, and tonight we did it another way where we worked our shape, tried to frustrate them, make them come to the game a little bit towards the end and then we tried to pick them off and that happened.” – Gary Monk

Like it or not, the Swansea gaffer has not only done better than many expected, but he’s also shown a managerial maturity in his early days patrolling the touchline at the Liberty Stadium. Home and away wins against both our lot and Manchester United have surely repaid the faith shown in him by Huw Jenkins. But this is not a blog where I praise Monk, but rather one were I lay into our support, and yes, even
Arsène Wenger a little bit.

Complaints and Grievances

ja banner.svg

From the outlook, you could say this was written by a rather angry man. While that may hold some truth, it’s the manner of the issues that have got me to this stage. I’m not here to be soft with my thoughts, but I don’t need to be at the level of Michael Owen to get my points across.

I’ve taken the title from one of my favorite stand up comedians of all time, George Carlin. I’ve seen some criticize him as an angry old man in his later years, but I think if you understood and agreed with his world view, you wouldn’t be a cheerful Johnny either. I may not be old exactly, but I’m unhappy about a number of things. So I’ve chosen this platform to share my discontent with you, my fellow Gooners.

Will We Ever See the Likes of Patrick Vieira Again at Arsenal?

sc banner

On his day there was very little that could get in the way of Patrick Vieira. At 6’4″ and weighing just over 13 stone it is easy to understand why. He was, quite simply, a man mountain.

Growing up I can remember watching the midfielder almost in awe. He seemed to be able to just brush past players, leaving them in his wake as though he were an adult joining in with a kids’ kickabout.

The Frenchman arrived at Arsenal in 1996 after what had been a miserable season in Milan, which saw him appear just twice in Serie A. But Arsène Wenger, aware of Vieira’s promise from his time at Cannes, took the hit and £3.5m later he was an Arsenal player.

The rest as they often say is history – but what a history.
