Alexis Sánchez – Arsenal’s Player of the Season

Simon submitted this blog before the Chelsea game and we think he makes a pretty compelling case for Alexis as Arsenal’s Player of the Season. – OG

There was a sense of inevitability about Arsenal’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Reading. It wasn’t the fact that the Gunners reached their 19th final in the competition’s history, but instead that Alexis Sánchez was once again the difference.

Simply put, the Chilean has been a revelation this season.

The semi-final win over Reading was just another indication of how important he has already become to Arsène Wenger’s side. When needed, the forward is seemingly able to lift Arsenal by the scruff of their neck and drag them over the finish line.

Time and time again, Sánchez has bailed Arsenal out. Particularly his influence was felt at the start of the season as the squad struggled with injuries.

Where’s the RAF When You Need Them?

at banner

Disclaimer: Despite my complete respect and admiration of “the so few” who scrambled from their airfields at Biggin Hill, Hawkinge, Kenley, Manston, Hornchurch and so many other locations around England to defend the skies during the aerial Blitz from Hermann Görings vaunted Luftwaffe, this post won’t divulge into a history lesson – the title however, I assure you, is valid.

With Germany now currently being at the forefront of football talent in Europe alongside the likes of Spain, the Netherlands, France and Italy, it’s easy to look at the Bundesliga and tell yourself that these are players we’d love to have in our first-team as we look to build from season to season.

The sheer amount of talented German footballers that are gracing the pitches in the nation that’s home to the Rhineland and the Black Forrest, as well as in Spain and England is rather commendable. Coming off their World Cup triumph in Brazil, being touted as having arguably the best youth pipeline on the continent at current, and with the top clubs in the Premier League having the money to burn as they look to compete year on year, I am here to tell you that we are one club that should resist a German invasion as staunchly as possible…just as if it were 1940 all over again.

Stick or Twist: Goalies, Klopp and the Voice of the Fans

og banner

Welcome back to Stick or Twist – the regular Tuesday blog from #ABW Chief Blogger, the Other Geoff.  The concept is simple – OG will pick a few topics each week and give his thoughts followed by a verdict using the terms STICK or TWIST.  Then you get the chance to vote and let us know if you agree.

stick (stĭk): stand; hold the course. The state or condition of adhering.

twist (twist): hit; make a change. A variation in approach.

On Goalkeepers in the FA Cup Final:

If ever there was a topic perfectly suited for this column, it is the debate over who minds the sticks in the FA Cup Final on May 30th. It’s been lobbed up there perfectly with the win at the weekend and I’m fully intending to tackle it before we are all thoroughly sick of the discussion.

It almost feels a bit anti-climactic – the penultimate moment in the FA Cup at the weekend is perhaps just that: not quite the full monty, but rather an apéritif designed to stimulate the appetite ahead of the full course final. That’s not to say that facing Reading was a formality. These games have a way of stretching us and to me that is part of the magic of the Cup – any team on any day can beat any other team.

Stick or Twist: Morgan Schneiderlin and Great Opportunities

Welcome back to Stick or Twist – the regular Tuesday blog from #ABW Chief Blogger, the Other Geoff.  The concept is simple – OG will pick a few topics each week and give his thoughts followed by a verdict using the terms STICK or TWIST.  Then you get the chance to vote and let us know if you agree.

twist (twist): hit; make a change. A variation in approach.

On Morgan Schneiderlin:

On Sunday morning, I found myself casually watching the Manchester derby over a cup of coffee.  City started so brightly and the opening goal was thoroughly deserved – based on the opening 10 minutes, you’d feel confident of a City blowout.

What happened next was truly a shocking display by the Premier League champions. United got what was perhaps a fortuitous goal followed by some horrific defending by a certain Gaël Clichy to allow the second and all of a sudden, City looked finished. It was such a contrast to how they’d played those opening minutes and yet they never ever looked like threatening United again.

Be Careful What You Wish For: A Warning on Ticket Price Limits & Hoping for a Panacea

guest banner

By ‘ABW Guest Blogger’ Calvin Masterson (@calvinmasterson)

Ever since I started really following English football & the Arsenal (around 2008) one thing has been a constant pain point (besides Arsenal in fourth place): complaints about ticket prices. Fans of Arsenal (& other clubs) are constantly raising the issue of the ever-increasing prices of tickets. This has led to the formation of fan groups, rallies & protests against clubs and the Premier League itself. The noise has only intensified since the announcement of the new five billion pound domestic TV rights deal to begin in 2016-17. One common refrain since then (most recently mentioned by Tim Payton of the AST on ‘A Bergkamp Wonderland’ Podcast #103 is for a freeze on PL ticket prices. However, a freeze (or any method of price limiting) has one potentially massive negative consequence: discrimination.

Jack Wilshere?

guest banner

By ‘ABW Guest Blogger’ Aaqib A. (@Aaqib_Alyas)

Coquelin has emerged as our new defensive midfielder and Wenger may be hesitant on purchasing a new midfielder. With the possibility of Flamini leaving this summer maybe Jack could play a deeper role also?

Ever since Steven Gerrard retired from international football Jack Wilshere has taken over his position as the defensive midfielder/deep lying playmaker for England. Displaying four Man of the Match performances in a row, serious questions have been asked if he could do the same for Arsenal.
