The Greatest Love of All

By ‘#ABW Chief Blogger’ The Other Geoff (@Hollefreund)

Rotterdam – June 20th, 2000: Sérgio Conceição’s hat trick against Germany in the final group game condemned the mighty Nationalmannschaft to an embarrassing exit from Euro 2000. It was the end of the road for a team that enjoyed so much success in the nineties. Even more troubling for the DFB – the German version of the FA – there were no apparent heirs to the throne coming through the youth set-ups at the Bundesliga clubs.

Where do you go from there? How do you improve the performances of the National team in both the short term and for generations to come? How do you prevent another Rotterdam incident?

It’s No Surprise That ‘Welbz Is Dat Guy’

By Simon Collings (@sr_collings)

“It’s No Surprise That ‘Welbz Is Dat Guy'”

When the first murmurings began on transfer deadline day that Arsenal were in contention to sign Danny Welbeck, I was shocked at the reaction it received from fans. Twitter was awash with people fuming at Arsene Wenger for seemingly failing in the transfer market. Even the Bergkamp Wonderland panel were thoroughly unimpressed.

But I couldn’t understand why. At the time, and still now for a matter of fact, I thought Welbeck was a brilliant piece of business.

Media Criticism Too Relentless Or Harsh In The Modern Game?

By Jake (@JakeArsenal1)

“Media Criticism Too Relentless Or Harsh In The Modern Game?”

It seems in today’s world we are more and more inundated with images of war, the latest celebrity to turn to drugs, and more horrible things in modern news. As a teenager I queried, where is the happy news channel? This, can also not be escaped by those who’s jobs it is to analyse football for a living.

How often, or what’s the percentage of time spent between criticising a team, or an individual player, compared to singing their praises? It seems to me at least, the former wins this with an alarming regularity.

Fordlândia And The Four Four Two

By ‘#ABW Chief Blogger’ The Other Geoff (@Hollefreund)

I bet a lot of you didn’t know that trying to buy mass quantities of rubber in the 1920’s was a vastly expensive prospect – especially if the entire world knew you needed it. The problem was that the majority of the world’s rubber supply in those days was controlled by a very small group of people – acting like a monopoly. In essence, if you needed rubber, you had to go through this rubbery cartel. Now that’s not a problem if you just need a few elastics or a rubber duck to accompany you in the bath, but if you’re the foremost automobile tycoon of the day, tire costs could get a little… erm, inflated.
