Why Arsenal should go all out for Monchi

If Arsenal are genuinely serious about appointing a director of football for the first time in the club’s history, then there really is only one man for the job.

His name is Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo, although you may well know him as Monchi, and his decision to leave Sevilla has sent Europe’s biggest clubs into a frenzy.

During his 17 years with the Spanish club, the 48-year-old transformed the club to leave them with a productive youth setup and an unrivaled scouting network which spans across all corners of the globe.

Be Counted or be Accountable

To say the atmosphere around Arsenal is palpable would be kind to say the least. The last 18 months have been frustrating not only in terms of the agonisingly repetitive November slump, round of 16 exit from the Champion’s League or predictable title challenge haunting before march, also the consistent positives we’ve enjoyed have been fleeting at best.

Every year the board and Wenger say we’re going to try to win the Premier League and Champion’s League but when we fall at the same hurdles season after season is there really enough being done to achieve this? We’ve kept the team together and spent £90 million in the summer just to look like we’ve regressed.

The fantastic Arsenal brand of football, rightly dubbed ‘Wengerball’ that we’ve enjoyed for the last 10 years has done a Houdini. To add insult to injury I don’t think it would be unfair to suggest that over the majority of the last 18 months we’ve looked clueless in how to build attacks in general, let alone play consistent, aesthetically brilliant football like we’ve become accustomed to throughout the Wenger tenure.

Why it all needs to be burnt to the ground

I was talking to my friend Jess in the aftermath of the Bayern massacre in London last week, and she made a rather interesting reference to Alexis Sánchez grinning on the bench during our discussion. While it’s clear both Sánchez and Petr Čech were laughing at something unrelated, her quip of “the look on Alexis’ face might be what Nero looked like when Rome was burning” summed it all up perfectly.

Perhaps as supporters, maybe all we can do is laugh in the face of tragedy. Some others will take to Twitter, AFTV, Facebook, or whatever other platform to voice their displeasure; do not knock it, it’s their right, even if you disagree with it.

Let us not forget those who still, perhaps stubbornly or out of loyalty – either blind or well founded – back Wenger and will follow the man into the fray until the end of time. As for me, I am here to say that it must be burnt to the ground, top to bottom. All of it.
